At Canopy Community's London demo night, one founder stopped the room. Jean-Paul Efang, founder of GaimControl, walked away with the People's Choice award — voted for by a diverse audience of founders, operators, students, and investors who had just witnessed a pitch unlike anything else on the night. That recognition is what this article is here to celebrate.

Meet Jean-Paul Efang and GaimControl

GaimControl began as a mental health application designed to help people suffering from gambling harms recover psychologically. It has since evolved into something more ambitious: a fintech providing behavioural underwriting — a process that works with financial services to identify credit applicants with gambling issues and, rather than turning them away, helps them address their financial and psychological challenges at the same time.

The product sits at the intersection of mental health, AI, and financial services. Large language models power the delivery. Machine learning analyses gambling behaviours and maps the best recovery pathways. It is a genuinely original category, and Jean-Paul is the person who built it.

Built from the Inside Out

Jean-Paul had a gambling problem himself. That is what triggered the creation of GaimControl. He also spent a decade working in finance — so when he started building at the intersection of recovery and financial services, it was, in every sense, a full-circle moment.

What sets GaimControl apart from almost every other startup in the mental health or fintech space is where the product starts. GaimControl does not design solutions and then ask for lived-experience input. Lived experience is the foundation. Jean-Paul manages a community of 20,000 gamblers in recovery, and the product is built from the inside out. That is not a differentiator. It is the entire point.

A Pitch That Broke the Mould

For Jean-Paul, the London demo night was his first time pitching to such a wide, mixed audience. He had been told beforehand that GaimControl's topic was too technical for general audiences. The demo night proved otherwise.

In preparation, he spoke with mentor Sarah, and the briefing and communication from the Canopy team were noted as particularly helpful. He arrived ready — and the audience responded. The People's Choice vote is driven by the room, and the room chose Jean-Paul. He was so impressive that he was invited back as a panelist at the following month's London demo night — a rare and well-earned recognition.

The Proof Is in the Pilot

GaimControl pivoted nine months ago to integrate into financial services — and the results from a pilot in Finland are striking. Most participants quit gambling. The majority had their debt refinanced at lower rates. Six months after the pilot ended, not one had missed a single debt payment.

Back in the UK, discussions are underway with partners across the credit system. Jean-Paul is targeting a UK market launch in Q3 2026. Support from the NatWest Accelerator has included hypothesis validation, internal bank introductions, event invitations, and awareness-raising. The momentum is real.

Advice from a People's Choice Winner

Jean-Paul's advice for any first-time founder preparing to pitch is built around three ideas.

"Be yourself — because everyone else is already taken."

The second is preparation. Know your numbers. Know your market. Know your solution inside out. And the third is to enjoy the experience. If a founder cannot answer basic questions about their own idea, that is a red flag for any early-stage investor in the room — and the room will notice.

These are not platitudes. They are the principles Jean-Paul lived out on the night he won.

What's Next for GaimControl

Jean-Paul is currently fundraising, and the trajectory of GaimControl is pointed firmly forward. The UK market launch is on track for Q3 2026, with credit partnerships progressing in parallel.

As the People's Choice winner, he receives 12 months of virtual incubation with Canopy Community and access to the Vintage cohort — a global community of 30 People's Choice winners. He is looking for connections with other founders, honest peer feedback, and introductions to investors who understand what it means to build something that has never quite existed before. If that sounds like you, read on.
