Every Demo Night reminds us why the founder journey matters. It’s a space where ideas meet encouragement, where early-stage startups share their vision, and where a supportive community shows up to listen, learn, and cheer each other on.
This week in London, that energy was unmistakable. The room was full of founders, students, mentors and investors who believe in building things that matter. By the end of the evening, one founder had clearly captured the imagination of the audience.
Winnie was voted the People’s Choice Award winner.
Her pitch combined deep empathy, thoughtful research, and a powerful mission: helping therapists provide better support to their clients between therapy sessions.
It was a special moment, and one that perfectly reflects the spirit of the Canopy Community — founders helping founders move one step closer to building something meaningful.
A Founder Building While Studying
Winnie is currently completing a master’s degree in psychology at City St George’s in London while building her startup alongside her studies.
That balance alone is impressive. Anyone who has tried to build a company while studying knows the challenge. But Winnie’s energy on stage showed someone who is deeply motivated by the problem she is solving.
Her startup focuses on improving continuity of care in mental health support.
Between therapy sessions there are 168 hours. During that time many people are left to manage their mental health alone. Some people struggle with difficult emotions. Others fall back into unhealthy coping habits. Increasingly, some are even turning to AI tools as substitutes for therapy.
Winnie’s idea is to change that dynamic.
She is building a clinical workflow platform that helps therapists support their clients between sessions. The goal is to extend care beyond the therapy room and give clinicians better insight into how their clients are doing throughout the week.
It’s a simple idea with powerful implications. When therapists have better visibility and patients feel supported throughout the week, the entire care journey becomes stronger.
For many people in the room, that vision resonated immediately.
From Attendee to Award Winner
One of the most inspiring parts of Winnie’s story is that she didn’t start on the stage. She started in the audience.
She had attended several Demo Nights before deciding to pitch herself. She watched other founders present, learned how the evening flows, and absorbed the energy of the community.
That journey — from observer to participant — is something we see often in the Canopy ecosystem. Many founders first come along to learn and connect. Then, when the moment feels right, they step forward with their own idea.
For Winnie, that moment arrived this week.
Her discovery of Demo Night came through another innovation event in London, where someone mentioned the City Ventures programme and encouraged her to attend. She signed up, joined the audience, and experienced the community firsthand.
A few months later she was pitching.
And by the end of the night, the audience had voted her the winner.
Connecting with the Room
What made Winnie’s pitch stand out was not just the idea. It was the way she connected with the audience.
Mental health is an important but sensitive topic. Presenting it in a room full of founders and students requires care and confidence.
Instead of opening with heavy statistics or clinical language, Winnie chose a more human approach. She engaged the audience early and invited them into the story she was telling.
That small moment changed the dynamic in the room. People leaned in. They felt part of the conversation.
Great founders understand that pitching is not just about explaining a product. It’s about creating connection and trust.
Winnie’s warmth, curiosity and authenticity made that connection feel natural.
Her enthusiasm also came from a very real place. She believes deeply in the problem she is solving. That belief gives her confidence on stage and helps her communicate the impact her startup could have.
When founders speak with genuine conviction, people notice.
Advice for Future Demo Night Founders
After the event, Winnie shared some thoughtful advice for founders thinking about pitching at a future Demo Night.
Her first suggestion was simple: prepare for the specific audience in the room. Every demo event has its own energy, and understanding the community you are speaking to helps shape the story you tell.
She also recommended arriving early. Spending time in the room before the event begins allows founders to get comfortable with the space and settle any nerves.
Another insight was to read the room. Watching how earlier speakers connect with the audience can give valuable signals about what resonates and how people are responding.
And finally, she encouraged founders to enjoy the moment.
Pitching can feel intimidating, especially for first-time founders. But Demo Night is designed to be a supportive environment. When founders relax and allow their passion to show, the audience responds positively.
The Beginning of the Next Chapter
Winning People’s Choice is always something to celebrate. But in many ways it is also just the beginning.
Winnie now joins the group of founders who continue their journey with the support of the Canopy Community. Over the next twelve months she will have access to mentorship, peer learning, and opportunities designed to help early-stage startups grow.
This is the real magic of Demo Night.
It’s not simply a pitch competition. It’s a gateway into a global founder community where ideas are nurtured, encouragement flows freely, and founders learn together.
For Winnie, this moment marks the start of a very exciting chapter.
A founder with empathy.
A mission rooted in mental wellbeing.
And a community ready to support her journey.
We are proud to celebrate her People’s Choice win and look forward to seeing what she builds next.
