Why Credibility Is a Startup Founder's Most Valuable Asset
Aug 03, 2026
Every founder dreams about raising investment, landing major customers or achieving a successful exit. Yet, according to entrepreneur and angel investor Matt O'Donovan, the foundation for all three is much simpler: credibility.
In the latest episode of The Investor Circle Podcast, host Stewart Noakes speaks with Matt about building Spark WiFi from a garage startup into one of the UK's largest managed Wi-Fi providers before successfully selling the business. Today, Matt invests in early-stage companies, giving him the rare perspective of having experienced both sides of the investment table.
His biggest lesson?
The best deals begin with an honest story.
Investors buy confidence—not hype
Many first-time founders assume they need to make every opportunity sound bigger than it really is.
Matt argues the opposite.
Experienced investors and acquirers perform extensive due diligence. They will challenge assumptions, examine financial forecasts and test every important claim. Overstating future opportunities rarely strengthens a business—it usually weakens trust.
Founders who present realistic expectations, defend their numbers and openly discuss risks build far greater confidence than those promising impossible growth curves.
For early-stage founders, credibility compounds. Every honest conversation makes the next one easier.
Great founders solve problems they genuinely care about
When asked what captures his attention first as an angel investor, Matt didn't mention technology, financial models or market size.
He started with the founder.
Passion matters because building a company is difficult. Investors know there will be setbacks, changing markets and unexpected challenges. They want to back founders who remain committed because they genuinely care about solving the problem—not simply because they hope to make money.
The strongest businesses often begin with personal experience. Spark WiFi itself was born because Matt wanted reliable internet access on his own boat. That simple frustration became the foundation of a company serving customers across the UK and Europe.
AI is changing investing—but not human judgement
Artificial intelligence is transforming software development and lowering barriers to building products.
That doesn't automatically make every startup more investable.
Matt explains that investors are increasingly asking whether an innovation can be easily replicated by larger competitors. Businesses combining proprietary knowledge, industry expertise, automation and differentiated products may prove more resilient than software alone.
Technology evolves quickly.
Trust, judgement and execution remain competitive advantages.
Every acquisition is ultimately about people
One of the most refreshing insights from the conversation is that acquisitions are rarely just financial transactions.
Every company carries its own personalities, motivations and culture. Founders sell for many different reasons, and successful acquisitions depend as much on understanding people as understanding balance sheets.
For investors, backing the right founder is often more important than backing the perfect business plan.
One question every founder should answer
Matt leaves founders with a challenge that every entrepreneur should consider before speaking to investors.
Why are you building this company?
If your answer begins and ends with making money, you'll struggle to inspire experienced investors.
If your answer demonstrates conviction, purpose and a genuine desire to improve people's lives, investment becomes a conversation about impact rather than simply valuation.
That authenticity is difficult to fake—and impossible to ignore.
If you found these insights valuable, there's even more in the full conversation.
