How a PRR Grant Helped Canopy Build a Better Home for First-Time Founders and Early-Stage Investors
2026 june prr grant thank you Jun 24, 2026
Doing that well takes investment. And that is exactly what the Vales para Incubadoras e Aceleradoras grant — part of Portugal's Plano de Recuperação e Resiliência (PRR), funded by Next Generation EU — has enabled at Canopy Community since September 2024.
This is our thank-you note, and our progress report.
What the PRR grant unlocked
The PRR Vale Incubadoras programme helps Portuguese incubators invest in their own development — technology, team, knowledge — so the support they give startups becomes more specialised and more scalable. For a community-led hub like Canopy, that framing was perfect. It let us pour resources into the connective tissue between founders, mentors, investors and content that makes an ecosystem actually work.
The challenge agreed with Startup Portugal and IAPMEI was clear: deliver 3 programmes, develop 9 distinct service types for founders, and incubate 20 startups over the grant window. We are proud to say we overachieved on all three — and the rest of this post is what that overachievement actually looks like.
What we built with it
Here is what the PRR-supported work has produced — measured in things you can actually count.
More programmes than promised. The brief asked for 3. We ran more — Virtual Incubation, Global Demo Nights, the Build Your Own Future student campaign, Ask Canopy, the Founder Friday and Investor Circle podcasts, and the In-Residence advisor network — all live, all repeatable, all interlocking.
More founders incubated than promised. The brief asked for 20. We have now built a personalised 6-month incubation plans process across our Vintage 1 and Vintage 2 cohorts, with the next cohort already in the pipeline. Each plan maps the founder's startup to relevant podcast episodes, Knowledge Share transcripts, blog posts, advisors and recommended events.
The 9 services we promised — and what they look like today
The grant agreement asked us to develop nine specific service types for founders. Here is the receipt on each one.
1. Demo Nights. We put founders on stage in front of investors and peers, so the market can stress-test their pitch in real time.
2. Mentoring and coaching from globally relevant experts. We pair every founder with senior operators who have built, scaled, sold and invested in companies across multiple geographies.
3. Knowledge sharing from experts and peers, written and video. We publish recorded Knowledge Shares, podcast episodes and blog posts so founders can learn at their own pace, anywhere.
4. Educational programmes for founders on the startup journey. We design structured curricula covering every stage of building a company, from first idea to investor-ready growth business.
5. Investment readiness training. We coach founders on storytelling, financial modelling, data rooms and investor psychology so they walk into pitches genuinely prepared to close.
6. Introductions to digital transformation consultants and service providers. We connect founders with vetted partners for web, tooling, automation and digital workflows, so they ship faster with less risk.
7. International acceleration programmes for UK and US markets. We help founders enter UK and US markets through targeted introductions, market briefings, partner networks and on-the-ground founder support.
8. Soft landing programmes for the UK market. We give founders a London base of contacts, customers, advisors and investors so the move into the UK feels supported, not solo.
9. Advisory to incubators and Entrepreneur-in-Residence-as-a-Service. We sell our incubation playbook and place experienced entrepreneurs to support other regional incubators as a managed external service.
Nine services committed. Nine services live. Several of them already productised beyond the original scope — and Canopy is now listed by the Financial Times as a Top European Startup Hub, a credential we did not have eighteen months ago.
Why this matters if you are a first-time founder
The PRR grant did not just buy us tools. It bought us the ability to say yes to founders who would otherwise be too early, too unfunded, or too geographically far from a traditional incubator to get help. The 6-month plan, the Knowledge Shares, the blog library, the monthly Demo Night — all built so a first-time founder can plug into a proper ecosystem without needing to be physically in London, Lisbon or San Francisco.
You do not need warm introductions to get started. You just need to show up.
Why this matters if you are an early-stage investor
For pre-seed and seed investors, deal flow quality is everything. The PRR-funded work means founders coming out of Canopy arrive better-prepared: clearer thesis, curated mentor list, investor-readiness review, and exposure to advisors who have already pressure-tested the model. Our Global Demo Nights and Investor Circle podcast put you in the room with those founders earlier and more often.
If you back early-stage companies and want a structured way to meet them, our Demo Night calendar is open.
What is next
The PRR backed phase of our development has finished and so now we must turn our attention to delivering at scale, and commercialising these incredible assets: the Virtual Incubation library, the Demo Night cadence, the Ask Canopy archive, and the In-Residence advisor network. Commercialisation is important for the long term sustainability of Canopy so that when the funding ends, the community infrastructure does not.
To Startup Portugal, IAPMEI, the PRR team and Next Generation EU: Many thanks. You backed the invisible work that makes founders' lives better within our community. With your help we have built a better ecosystem and we now turn our attention to becoming a formal member of the RNI network of incubators in Portugal as a logical next step.
If you are a first-time founder, an investor, or a partner who wants to plug in, come and find us. The door is open. We are here to serve you.
Canopy Community is operated in Portugal as Talkingmore Lda and is a Financial Times Top European Startup Hub. This project is co-financed by the Plano de Recuperação e Resiliência (PRR) and the European Union — Next Generation EU.
